Background

Career Keeper is a personal career platform that encourages members to record their work and life "wins" as a resource to help aid users with their careers.  Users can keep track of significant life events by creating "work win" stories and adding them to their profiles.

Through Plain Sight creative agency, I was hired to lead the redesign of the current website.  The goal of the redesign was to create a more modern-feeling product as well as address some of the current issues that users faced when using the application.  In addition to the web application redesign, I was also tasked with creating a dashboard where users can add, edit, and update their work opportunities.

Research Methods

  • User Interviews
  • Usability Testing
  • Site Audit
User interviews were conducted with business professionals to better understand how they recognize and record personal accomplishments throughout their careers.
A usability test was conducted with business professionals on the original site to identify issues with the workflow and opportunities for improvement.
A site audit was conducted to better identify areas of opportunity for improvement.

Research Insights

User Interview Insights
  • Business professionals feel like they do not have enough dedicated time to record accomplishments in their careers.
  • Business professionals are hired based on 1) making a connection between the job requirements and their relevant experience 2) confidence/personality 3) networking
  • A polished resume isn't enough to showcase past relevant experience and cross-functional skills directly related to a job description.
Usability Testing Insights
  • Users found the original homepage difficult to navigate and couldn't figure out where to find previous "work wins."
  • Users didn't feel like the "work wins" were personal enough and didn't find it very motivating.
  • Users didn't like the idea of being prompted to record "something they accomplished" on a daily basis.

Restructuring the Homepage

The main goal for the CareerKeeper website is to serve as a place where professionals can record and keep track of various milestones reached throughout their lives and careers. These milestones are recorded as stories on the site called "work wins."

To optimize for navigation, I chose to format the homepage as a combination of a dashboard where users can see their personal progress and stats, and as a feed so that users can easily navigate through their previous "work wins" as well as record new wins. I created a filter option so that users can also easily find a win by most recent, type of win, associated role, or media.

Creating a "Win" Flow
In order to optimize for engagement, we needed to reconfigure the process of creating the "work win". In the original design, the content was created through a text-only form with two fields: title and description. I added additional fields to guide the user to create a more detailed story. We also added the option to upload media or attach a URL, as well as directly attach a "work win" to a specific past or current role.

Profile Page

In the original design, there was not a profile page, rather the user's personal information (current career experience, past career experience, etc.) was on the homepage. We wanted to create a separate profile page as a way for the user to keep track of all of their past and present work experience, similar to a digital resume.

On this page, the user can write their "personal statement," edit their profile settings (title, profile picture, etc.,) as well as upload copies of their resumes. They can also record their current career experience as well as past career experiences. If a "win" were created for a specific career experience it will be "attached" to that experience.

New Feature: Job Opportunities Page

With restructuring the homepage and creating the profile page, we felt that we were creating an engaging and easy way for users to record these important career moments. However, we weren't yet solving the problem of how to communicate cross-functional skills and relevant work experiences with a specific job role.
With this redesign, an additional feature was added that allows users to keep track of their job search process, by uploading job descriptions found on various job board sites, and tagging specific work wins to highlighted portions of the job descriptions.
